Cyber-security report shows increase in threat to servers

Data center. PHOTO: GOOGLE.COM/SEARCH
Networking giant, Cisco, has advised governments and organisations on the need to demonstrate huge security capabilities, having discovered dramatic increase in spam volume as well as huge server vulnerabilities.
In its 2017 Annual Cybersecurity Report (ACR), which also showed the true cost of cybercrime, Cisco informed that attackers now launch more attacks against servers.
Attacks on server can run the company or organisation down by making hitherto closed information available to attackers; this is even as the breaches impact the firm financially.
The Cisco report showed servers became 34 per cent more vulnerable to attacks, compared to client (eight per cent) and networks (20 per cent) in 2016.

According to the report, over one-third of organisations that experienced a breach in 2016 reported substantial customer, opportunity and revenue loss of more than 20 per cent.
Cisco noted that 90 per cent of these organisations are improving threat defence technologies and processes after attacks by separating IT and security functions (38 per cent), increasing security awareness training for employees (38 per cent), and implementing risk mitigation techniques (37 per cent). The report surveyed nearly 3,000 chief security officers (CSOs) and security operations leaders from 13 countries in the Security Capabilities Benchmark Study, part of the Cisco ACR.
The global report highlighted challenges and opportunities for security teams to defend against the relentless evolution of cybercrime and shifting attack modes.
According to the networking company, CSOs cite budget constraints, poor compatibility of systems, and a lack of trained talent as the biggest barriers to advancing their security postures. Leaders also revealed that their security departments are increasingly complex environments with 65 per cent of organisations using from six to more than 50 security products, increasing the potential for security effectiveness gaps.
To exploit these gaps, ACR data showed criminals leading a resurgence of “classic” attack vectors, such as adware and email spam, the latter at levels not seen since 2010. Spam accounts for nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) of emails with eight to 10 per cent cited as malicious.
Global spam volume is rising, often spread by large and thriving botnets.
Cybersecurity has changed drastically since the inaugural Cisco ACR in 2007. While technology has helped attacks become more damaging and defences become more sophisticated, the foundation of security remains as important as ever. In 2007, the ACR reported web and business applications were targets, often via social engineering, or user-introduced infractions. In 2017, hackers attack cloud-based applications, and spam has escalated.
The 2017 ACR reports that just 56 percent of security alerts are investigated and less than half of legitimate alerts remediated. Defenders, while confident in their tools, battle complexity and manpower challenges, leaving gaps of time and space for attackers to utilise to their advantage.
Cisco advises organisations to take steps to prevent, detect, and mitigate threats and minimise risk.

These steps include; making security a business priority: Executive leadership must own and evangelise security and fund it as a priority. Measure operational discipline: Review security practices, patch, and control access points to network systems, applications, functions, and data. Test security effectiveness: Establish clear metrics. Use them to validate and improve security practices. Adopt an integrated defence approach: Make integration and automation high on the list of assessment criteria to increase visibility, streamline interoperability, and reduce the time to detect and stop attacks. Security teams then can focus on investigating and resolving true threats.
General Manager, Cisco Nigeria, Olakunle Oluruntimehin, noted that the penetration of mobile and growth in Internet usage also means that “we are more vulnerable to cybercrimes. That is why we leverage our partners, the Cisco Networking Academy programme and certifications in addition to typical customer enablement activities to grow our Security market share.
“We have a growing list of over 300 partners in Nigeria, covering Security in Verticals like Retail, Financial Services, Oil, Healthcare, Hospitality and Public Sector. The Cisco Networking Academy is expanding its causes to include Security Everywhere by providing knowledge and capacity building partnering with government and private educational institutions; this actually aligns with the skills development and jobs creation goal of the Government ensuring that we are also increasing skills in Security IT. We currently have over 130 academies in Nigeria and have more Academies joining this number on a quarterly basis.”

Nigerian scientist advances technology to convert urine into gas

A Nigeria scientist, Ejikeme P. Nwosu, and his team of researchers have fabricated equipment that converts urine into flammable gases, biomethane and hydrogen-rich gases, with 100 per cent indigenous technological inputs.
• Claims Products Could Be Used To Run Gas Turbine Generate Over 11,250 Megawatts Electricity
A Nigeria scientist, Ejikeme P. Nwosu, and his team of researchers have fabricated equipment that converts urine into flammable gases, biomethane and hydrogen-rich gases, with 100 per cent indigenous technological inputs.
Nwosu, a graduate of Pure and Industrial Chemistry from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU), Anambra State with Masters of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, told The Guardian that a blend of these gases- biomethane and hydrogen-rich gases- can be effectively used to run a gas turbine generator to give the nation over 11,250 megawatts hours of electricity.
Biomethane is a 100 per cent renewable energy source produced by the natural breakdown of organic material: green waste, household waste, agricultural waste, food industry waste and even industrial waste.

Nwosu further explained: “According to 2011 National Agricultural Sample Survey, Nigeria was endowed with an estimated 19.5 million cattle, 72.5 million goats, 41.3 million sheep, 7.1 million pigs and 28,000 camels. If these animals are properly ranched, the wastes collected and processed over 10,000 Megawatts of electricity will be generated as well from these animals.
“From these analysis, it is obvious that the solution to epileptic power supply we encounter is within our reach. By end of this year or latest 2018 first quarter, I hope to develop most efficient means of running cars fully on urine. The research is ongoing and I have no doubt what a determined mind can achieve.”
He added: “We have also put up another plant (digester) that converts solid biodegradable wastes to biomethane. These plants are located somewhere in Abuja outskirt. In the plant we have been able to generate and use the produced gases to cook for long times and to power generators.”
Nwosu is hopeful that some of the private firms and donor agencies his team has written to will respond positively so that they can make this technology available in homes, hospitals, prisons and others.
“We are not relenting though; we will be installing this plant at some private farms and facilities any moment this year,” he said.
Nwosu, in 2014, obtained a patent for his pioneer work in converting urine into flammable gases. The breakthrough raised the hope of the world using urine to solve its energy crisis.
Nwosu got Patent No NG/P/20/2013/699 for developing a process for conversion of urine into hydrogen-ammonia rich flammable gases and fire resistant materials.

Vodafone India and Idea Cellular announce merger

Vodafone
British mobile phone giant Vodafone will merge its Indian unit with Idea Cellular to create the country’s largest telecoms operator, the firms said on Monday.
“Vodafone Group Plc and Idea Cellular today announced that they have reached an agreement to combine their operations in India,” they said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
“The combined company would become the leading communications provider in India with almost 400 million customers, 35 percent customer market share and 41 percent revenue market share,” the statement added.

The confirmation ended months of speculation that the two operators were ready to sign a deal to help fend off Reliance Jio, whose recent arrival has shaken up India’s ultra-competitive mobile network market.
Reliance Jio, which began operations last year, is owned by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani.
The 4G Jio network launched in September with an audacious free service for the rest of 2016, followed by vastly cheaper data plans and free voice calls for life.
It forced rivals to dramatically slash their tariffs and left them scrambling to match the deep pockets of Jio, which is backed by India’s hugely wealthy energy-to-chemicals conglomerate Reliance Industries.
Shares in Idea rose almost four percent in Mumbai following announcement of the Vodafone deal

Uganda is worried about the number of Chinese men marrying their women

Contractors, petty traders, investors, and entrepreneurs from China have been pouring into Uganda for the past decade. China is a top investor in the east African country, accounting for as much as half of total foreign investment between 2014 and 2015, according to the Uganda Investment Authority.
But according to Ugandan immigration officials, there’s one major downside: an increasing number of Chinese men are marrying Ugandan women to gain residency and continue their business interests in the country.
Officials told a parliamentary committee in late November that they are seeing more and more Chinese-Ugandan couples, often in sham unions. Couples are normally interviewed before spousal status is granted and Chinese men involved in sham marriages are deported.
“But we have many who are marrying and even producing… Even our Ugandan women are accepting to [reproduce] with these men,”an official from Uganda’s directorate of citizenship and immigration control told the committee.
Major infrastructure projects like Uganda’s Mandela National Stadium, a $1.7 billion hydropower dam in western Uganda, and the highway connecting Entebbe to Kampala have all been built by Chinese companies. Attracted by Uganda’s stability and demand for cheap goods, independent traders and business people are also opening factories and retail shops selling imported Chinese goods. There are between 10,000 and 50,000 Chinese in the country, local Chinese expatriates estimate.
But now, tensions appear to be rising. Ugandan authorities are conducting more raids to catch foreigners living in the country illegally. In July, 12 Chinese were arrested for violating immigration laws.
Government-to-government relations have also come under strain. Last month, Ugandan lawmakers summoned a Chinese executive of the state-owned China Communication Construction to explain the circumstances of his company’s securing a $475 million contract to build an expressway in Entebbe.
Annoyed during the briefing, Zhong Weidong, managing director of the company, told the panel, “China assists African countries to develop. If you don’t like, it can stop; we can stop.”

Google, Amazon eye Toshiba’s chip unit: report

my pc is Toshiba sinnce 2012, before Amazoz, google eyes it.....lol Abraham
Toshiba
Google and Amazon joined a list of potential buyers eyeing Toshiba’s lucrative memory chip business as the Japanese conglomerate seeks bidders to cover huge losses, a newspaper said Saturday.
Toshiba has reportedly completed the first round of bidding for its prized memory chip business, seen as key for the cash-strapped company to turn itself around.
Some 10 foreign companies and funds, including Google and Amazon, tendered bids, the mass-circulation Yomiuri Shimbun said, quoting unnamed sources.
The two US tech giants are expected to use Toshiba’s memory chips for their cloud services, the daily said.
Taiwan’s Hon Hai, which acquired Japanese electronics maker Sharp last year, has apparently bid more than 2 trillion yen ($18 billion), the daily said.
Immediate confirmation of the report was not available.
Toshiba shares jumped more than five percent on Friday after local media reported that bidders included Apple, US private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners and American chipmaker Broadcom.
Toshiba is expected to negotiate with individual candidates this month.
Local media said any foreign buyer would need to pass a Japanese government review, given concerns about security around systems already using Toshiba’s memory chips.
Toshiba is the world’s number two supplier of memory chips for smartphones and computers, behind South Korea’s Samsung, and the business accounted for about a quarter of its 5.67 trillion yen in revenue last fiscal year.
The news report came after angry investors lambasted Toshiba executives at a shareholders meeting over its warning that annual losses could balloon to more than $9.0 billion.
The red ink is largely tied to huge cost overruns and construction delays at its US nuclear power unit Westinghouse Electric, which filed for bankruptcy protection late March.

New landing systems approved for 11 airports in nigeria, while Ethiopian sleeps

NAMA set to scale harmattan haze, weather hurdles nationwide
Smarting from nationwide flight disruptions last December and early January, the Federal Government has concluded plans to deploy new Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) in at least 11 airports nationwide.
The equipment, valued at several millions of dollars, will put an end to flight disruptions during harmattan season and other inclement weather conditions.
Managing Director of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Capt. Fola Akinkuotu, confirmed that the Federal Government had already made an order for ILS to go round the designated airfields and more.

An Instrument Landing System (ILS) enables aircraft to land if the pilots are unable to establish visual contact with the runway. It does this by way of transmitted radio signals.
According to experts, the system operates as a ground-based instrument approach system that provides precision lateral and vertical guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays. This enables a safe landing during Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), such as low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow.
Recall that domestic flights operations were on lockdown for several days last December due to envisaged harmattan haze. While more sophisticated wide-bodied foreign aircraft manoeuvred the haze, their domestic counterparts were grounded at airports across the country.
Akinkuotu, while conducting journalists round the upgraded navigational equipment at the Kaduna International Airport (KIA) recently, noted that visibility at many of the aerodromes are bad and the essence of deploying new ILS is to completely change the narrative.
He said: “Come December this year, there should be no excuse of aircraft not landing in harmattan.”
Among the airports to benefit from the critical safety tools are the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Port-Harcourt International Airport, Ibadan Airport, Benin Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe International, Abuja and Minna Airport among others.
According to Akinkuotu, “There are 11 ILSs that are going to be installed. They are brand new. Don’t let us forget that they are going to recover some items. Lagos has an ILS; I think Ibadan too is going to get newer ones. So, whatever we recover, we can put them in some other places. I would expect that over time when the materials, assets are in, we should be able to do not less than 18 fields.”
The plan is in line with the assurance given by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, that efforts were ongoing to keep improving all the airports amidst plans to have them concessioned in batches.
Sirika, in an interview with The Guardian, said there are plans to fix the whole airports, creating more activities around them to make them viable, attractive and bankable.
Currently, only very few aerodromes out of the 24 airports in Nigeria have airfield lighting and ILS.
The NAMA boss explained that there are two basic sets of costs associated with an ILS. They are installation costs, purchase of equipment, site surveying and preparation and upkeep costs.
“People forget that the latter doesn’t simply mean keeping the system in good repair; it also carries with it the requirement to regularly inspect the system to ensure it is operating within proper tolerances. The localiser provides guidance in lateral dimension on the lateral plain. Cooling is essential for this component,” he said.
He further said that with the new ILS in place, airplanes can land in zero visibility as long as they have corresponding equipment on-board their airplanes.

“What it means is that there would be all year flying in this place irrespective whether it is dust haze or early morning mist. I can guarantee you can do all year round flights in this place.
“The challenges in Port-Harcourt are different. In Port-Harcourt, every morning, it is very difficult to fly into Port-Harcourt Airport; that is why you find many airlines not going to Port-Harcourt before 8 am. Low clouds are there. The more sophisticated instrument landing systems you have, the easier it is for you to land.
“We have capability to land in zero condition; that is, you don’t see anything. If you are willing to pay for it not only in the equipment but the aircraft must properly be equipped; people have to be trained, power has to be regular at the airport,” Akinkuotu said.

Africa’s freight demand up by 24.3%

IATAInternational Air Transport Association (IATA) has released data for global air freight markets showing that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), rose by 6.9 per cent in January 2017 compared to the year-earlier period.

While this was down from the 10 per cent annual growth recorded in December 2016, it still was well above the average annual growth rate of three per cent over the past five years.

African carriers’ saw freight demand increase by 24.3 per cent in January 2017 compared to the same month last year, helped by very strong growth on the trade lanes to and from Asia.

IATA stated that demand between the two continents jumped by 57 per cent in January on the back of rapid long-haul expansion and increased direct services, adding that the increase in demand has helped the region’s seasonally adjusted load factor to rise after falling by five percentage points in 2016 compared to the previous year.

Growth in freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometers (AFTKs), slowed to 3.5 per cent in January 2017.The continued positive momentum in freight growth into 2017, according to the body coincides with a steady rise in new export orders, which reached their highest level in February (latest data available) since March 2011.

IATA also said there has also been an increase in the shipment of silicon materials typically used in high-value consumer electronics shipped by air. The timing of the Lunar New Year (in January 2017) also may have contributed to higher demand in January.IATA’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Alexandre de Juniac, said it has been a good start of the year for air cargo.

“Demand growth accelerated in January, bolstered by strengthening export orders. And that outpaced the capacity growth which should be positive for yields. And, longer-term, the entry into force of the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) will cut red tape at the borders for faster, cheaper and easier trade.

“The onus is now on the industry to seize the opportunity to accelerate the modernization of processes to make air cargo an even more compelling option for shippers,” de Juniac said.

84% Of 12 Million Married Children Under 10 Are Hindus

cm_620

Nearly 12 million Indian children were married before the age of 10 years–84% of them Hindu and 11% Muslim–reveals an IndiaSpend analysis of recently released census data.

To put it in context, this number is equivalent to Jammu & Kashmir’s population.

As many of 7.84 million (65%) married children were female, reinforcing the fact that girls are significantly more disadvantaged; eight in 10 illiterate children who were married were also girls.

Source: Census India

The data further reveal that 72% of all Hindu girls married before 10 were in rural areas, as compared to 58.5% Muslim girls, with higher levels of education correlating with later marriage.

Jain women marry latest (at a median age of 20.8 years), followed by Christian women (20.6 years) and Sikh women (19.9 years). Hindu and Muslim women have the lowest median age at first marriage (16.7 years), IndiaSpend reported earlier based on a seven-state report from Nirantar, a Delhi-based advocacy.

Women from urban areas, on average, marry more than two years later than their rural counterparts, IndiaSpend reported earlier.

The report also noted that the level of teenage pregnancy and motherhood is nine times higher among women with no education than among women with 12 or more years of education.

Source: Census India

80% of illiterate children married before 10 are girls

As many as 5.4 million (44%) married children under 10 were illiterate–80% of them female–indicating how lower levels of education correlate with early marriage.

As many as 1,403 females have never attended any educational institution for every 1,000 males who have not, IndiaSpend reported earlier.

In developing countries, girls with less access to quality education are more likely to marry early, argued Quentin Wodon, an advisor with the World Bank’s education department.

Better and safer job opportunities for girls may also reduce child marriage, as might better access to basic infrastructure (water, electricity), which frees up time spent on domestic chores for schooling, wrote Wodon.

Source: Census India

30% girls, 42% boys married before legal ages

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act states that a girl in India cannot marry before age 18, a boy before 21.

A Muslim girl can marry when she attains puberty or completes 15 years of age, according to Muslim Personal Law, the Gujarat High Court and Delhi High Court noted in different judgments.

As many as 102 million girls (30% of female population) were married before 18 in 2011; the number was 119 million in 2001 (44% of female population), a decrease of 14 percentage points over the decade.

Among boys, 125 million were married before 21 years of age (42% of male population) in 2011; the number was 120 million in 2001 (49% of male population), a decrease of 7 percentage points over the decade.

5 Banned Foods Ethiopians Should Stop Eating

Aflatoxin contamination of Shiro and ground red pepper samples collected from government owned good stores, retail shops and open markets in. Addis Ababa was investigated. From sixty samples each of ground red pepper and Shiro, 8 (13.33%) and 5 (8.33%) were positive for aflatoxins, respectively. Only aflatoxin B1 was detected in both types of foodstuff. There was no significant difference between the proportion of aflatoxin contained in both ground red pepper and Shiro samples. Aflatoxin levels in Shiro and ground red pepper positive samples ranged from 100 to 500 ppb and 250 to 525 ppb, respectively. The mean levels of contamination by aflatoxin in ground red pepper was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of Shiro. Though statistically not significant, the number of positive samples were more in samples from open markets when compared to samples from government owned food stores and retail shops. Conclusions are drawn that ground red pepper and shiro traded in Addis Ababa can be considered as high risk commodities for which routine survey of aflatoxins may be necessary. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9164040
