CDU rights are attacking Angela Merkel's climate crisis

Challenging Merkel: The right CDU-wing "Berlin Circle" denies loud ARD studio a "solitary role in the greenhouse effect" on global warming - and calls for a U-turn in climate policy of Chancellor.

Two days after the decision of US President Donald Trump to cancel the Paris climate agreement, the conservative wing in the CDU also demands a radical change in climate policy for Germany.
In a statement submitted to the ARD Capital Studio, the "Berlin Circle", which includes numerous federal and communal politicians of the Union, calls for an end to "moral blackmail" by climate research and the "farewell to German special targets" greenhouse gases.

Doubt in scientific models

The declaration was presented today at an internal meeting of the "Berliner Kreis" in the parliamentary groups of the CDU / CSU in the Reichstag in Berlin. The authors, among them Philipp Lengsfeld and Sylvia Pantel, are contesting a "solitary role of the greenhouse effect" and oppose a one-sided negative view of the consequences of global warming.
Thus, "the opportunities associated with the melting of polar sea ice (ice-free northern passage, new fishing opportunities, raw material extraction) are probably even greater than possible negative ecological effects". The world climatic IPCC had developed into a kind of "world salvation circus". However, the "increasingly aggressive political objectives, in particular the CO2 reduction targets" were based on the model calculations.

The "Berliner Kreis" calls for a move away from the two-degree goal.

"Two -degree goal no longer achievable"

Accordingly, the "Berliner Kreis" with the Klimapolitik of the federal government into the court. The goal of limiting global warming to two degrees is "no longer realistic". This is why it is also the wrong way to close the gap by "aggressive policy measures to reduce greenhouse gases". This is "even in Germany politically hardly to be implemented and would surely also lead to massive social upheavals".

German climate policy as a daunting example?

According to the authors' wishes, German climate policy should therefore no longer focus on mitigating climate change, but on adapting to changes. The current policy has not been an international model, but as a "daunting example".
Specifically, the criticism is directed primarily against the promotion of solar and wind power. The Renewable Energy Act (EEG) is not reformable and must be abolished. The promotion of e-mobility and the requirements for energy-related refurbishment should also be examined.

No word on the Paris agreement

The Paris Climate Protection Agreement is not mentioned in the "Berlin Circle". The cancellation of the two-degree goal, however, represents a fundamental contradiction to the objectives of the agreement, which was decided by 193 states in December 2015.
Just yesterday, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel described the Paris agreement as "irreversible" and "a vital instrument for our planet, our societies and our economies". It was important not to let the decision of the US government stop them, and to "concentrate more decisively than ever".

New Front of the Conservatives against Merkel

The declaration of the "Berlin Circle" is therefore a targeted campaign to the chancellor and party chairman. So far, the conservative alliance had concentrated on refugee policy and internal security, thus fostering considerable displeasure in the Union. With Klimapolitik the right wing of the party now opens a new front against Merkel - and this demonstratively in the executive committee of the Bundestagsfraktion.
From the point of view of the Greens, the declaration that Merkel has been slowed down for some time in climate policy: "The Federal Chancellor is only responsible for the headings on this topic." The reality is the mini-trumps in the CDU, "explained Parteichef Cem Özdemir.
