Olympic champion, Almaz Ayana, of Ethiopia destroyed women's 10000m field to claim the gold medal at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London on Saturday, August 5.
The World record holder and Rio Olympics champion, Ayana pulled away from the field six kilometers to go to cross the line 46 seconds ahead of her teammate Tirunesh Dibaba, the former world and Olympic champion.
On route to victory, Ayana covered the second 5000m in a blazing 14:26 to finish the 10000m race in a new world leading time of 30:16.32. Ayana's winning time was nearly one minute slower than her World record she set last year in Rio Olympics final.
"I am very happy to win this title, much more than when I won the Olympic gold because I have been sick this year and didn't expect it. In fact, this was my first race of 2017," Ayana told reporters.
