Dear ,Taiye Selasi, Chika Unigwe, Nii Ayikwei Parkes and Priya Basil
The University of Tübingen invited all of you to hold Lectures during the Tübinger Poetik-Dozentur 2014. We congretulate on this honour.
Still we demand you not to accept this Invitation, because the University of Tübingen as well as its Mayor are backing the use of discriminatory langauage even after powerful criticism arouse from the local and nationwide community of Black People.
This escalted in the Year 2012 when the Mayor was asked to intervene against the use of the M-Word at a local market and responded by using the word himself and justified it as being somewhat traditional. Since then he repeated the word and its justification over and over in public assemblies and public space.
Referring to language scientist from the University he insisted that there was no connection between this use of language and racism at all.
Neither the University nor the Mayor publically contradicted this statement. The University is not immune against ignorance, intolerance and the tendency to discrimination against minorities – as it demonstrated especially in Germany in the awake and during World War II.
The University of Tübingen is no exception – as a sign reminding of the mass murder of Jews, Sinti and Roma states:
„Members of the University were amongst the masterminds of racial fanatism“.
Even today the University gives its scientific reputation to legitimize the use of discriminating language and provide, as a scientific definition of racism is held against the view of those talked about.
The Mayor advised members and institutions of the Black people „calmness“, they should accept the Use of the M-Word.
Unfortunately the regional media is defending the Mayor and the University by Neglecting any Critizism.
This is why we ask you (and public persons in general) not to take part in an event where University and Mayor may pretend as cosmopolitan and tolerant while cultivating racist language as a tradition and defining racism in a colonial manner from a perspective of white (scientific) supremacy.
