I have had the good fortune of contributing a bit to Google’s Amharic translation project at an expert level.
The launch of Google Translate tools in Amharic has been understandably a cause for celebration among so many Ethiopians.
I should, however, caution my fellow Ethiopians that this “machine learning” project is still a work in progress.The translation is very basic. As a machine learning project, it will continuously improve as people use the tool more often and add their inputs and corrections. The quality will also improve as the online database in Amharic expands and gets richer. At this time, it can sometimes be very inaccurate.
For example:
“She is eating the orange” is translated as: እሷም ብርቱካንማ መብላት ነው:: As you can see, orange is translated as the color orange and the sentence is jumbled. Failing to recognize the context is a weak point in machine learning.
“She has eaten the banana” is translated as እሷም ሙዝ በልቼ አድርጓል:: Here again the translation is totally wrong because the “machine” or the aligorithm did not understand the the Amharic syntax.
“Let us take the kids to the zoo” has been translated into እስቲ መካነ ልጆቹ እንመልከት:: As you can see here, the Amharic sentence doesn’t make sense. Apparently, the machine could not find a matching word for “zoo” in Amharic besides the other mistakes.
I can say that the launch of the tool is a step forward but a lot remains to be done to make it more useful. So use it with great caution….
