Ambassador Greg Dorey says 100% parliamentary seat grab is North Korean Style
ESAT News June 30, 2015
Greg Dory, the British Ambassador in Ethiopia, told Ethiopian Reporter that he regretted the Ethiopian government did not allow the European Union, the United States, and the international community to observe the national election held on May 24, 2015.
The Ambassador said the European Union doubted the election process was free and fair. A clean sweep of all parliamentary and regional seats would put the country at crossroads, the ambassador told The Reporter.
Ambassador Greg Dorey said that 100% capture of all Federal and regional parliament seats by Ethiopian Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) is in the style of North Korea. The Ambassador stressed that diverse views should flourish in the parliament, and it is inappropriate to have no opposition party voice in the parliament of 547 seats.
Dorey said, “I believe several Ethiopians gave their votes to the opposition parties, and their representation should be addressed accordingly.” According to the Ambassador, the Ethiopian government should entertain vibrant voices reflected across the Country. The Ambassador also indicated that the British government did not observe the national election not because of financial constraints but because of the government's failure to invite the European Union to observe the election.
It is recalled that the European Union suspended the monetary support it had provided for the Ethiopian government after its report which stated serious flaws of the 2010 National Election was rejected by the Ethiopian government. The European Union said it was not necessary to observe the national election as all its reports were rejected by the Ethiopian regime.
ESAT recently reported that the British government announced it froze a one billion dollar fund following the accusation that the aid was used to suppress dissidents and to displace inhabitants.
The Reporter also interviewed Ambassador Greg Dorey on the issue of Andargachew Tsige. Greg Dorey who has visited Andargachew three times after his detention in Ethiopia did not know the detainee’s current status. The British government has the right to know the proper handling of all its citizens under custody in other countries. Ambassador Dorey underscored that the British government opposes the death penalty.
Asked about Wendy Sherman’s comment on Ginbot 7, Ambassador Greg Dorey told the Reporter that his government did not label Ginbot 7 a terrorist organization as they did not have a shred of evidence that makes the organization a terrorist.
Ambassador Greg Dorey believes that there is no fundamental difference between the British and American governments regarding their position on Ginbot 7.
